The DC Darlings Travel: Winter in New Hampshire

For the past few days, I trekked up to New England for a festive New Year’s Eve Weekend! I stayed at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. I had a wonderful time and I want to share my entire experience with you!! I highly recommend taking a weekend to enjoy the snowy activities in Bretton Woods! Also – if you have children, the Omni Resort is extremely family friendly. If you are looking for a family vacation, I can’t stress enough how perfect this resort is for you! Below, you will find the rundown of my glorious winter wonderland trip! I usually consider myself a tropics gal but I LOVED my weekend in the mountains. I hope you take the trip to NH after reading this!!!

The Omni Mount Washington Resort

Created by Joseph Stickney, this National Historic Landmark opened in 1902 and has been attracting generations of families ever since. As you can see, the Resort is modeled after Spanish Renaissance architecture.

The Gorgeous Lobby

The Resort has a slew of fabulous activities, including:

  • Recently-renovated 18-hole golf course
  • One of the longest zip line tours in New England
  • Nordic Skiing and Alpine Skiing in the winter at Bretton Woods – New Hampshire’s largest ski area
  • Multiple delicious restaurants including two Four Diamond dining rooms, the all-new Stickney’s Restaurant and the renovated “Cave” – a former speakeasy
  • Numerous resort activities including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, sleigh rides and more!

The outdoor heated pool – open all year round (our après dog sledding activity!)

I call this move, “the pizza…” Yes, this is my first time skiing in over ten years!

Muddy Paw Dog Sledding

All of the Muddy Paw Dog Sledding experiences are designed to be hands on to the comfort level of the guest. Participants, ages 2 and up, are given the opportunity to meet and pet the sled dogs (many of which are rescue and second chance), help harness and hitch their team and even help drive the sled (at musher discretion for guests and dog safety). All the proceeds generated from the tours help cover the expenses involved in caring for the precious canine pups!

I am absolutely obsessed with animals so this experience twas’ a dream come true! The entire tour lasted around two hours – half of the time is spent playing with the dogs and the remaining portion is dedicated to the sledding tour, in the picturesque forest. Upon our arrival, we met all the dogs and played with them. Shortly after, we met our musher (the guide) and we learned how to harness the dogs and leash them. Every dog at the kennel, upon seeing the leashes come out, started howling and barking…almost as in saying, “pick me!!!!” These dogs LOVE to run and they all made sure that we heard them 🙂

Once the dogs were all set up, my boyfriend and I bundled up into the sled, covered in multiple sleeping bags and blankets (we were very warm). Our musher let the dogs know we were about to begin and once he whistled…we were off!! These babies go quite fast!! 10 MPH might not sound quick but when you are in a wooden sled…it feels speedy!

I cannot say enough about how much I loved this experience. The dogs were absolutely adorable and they were extremely well taken care of. The Muddy Paw Dog Kennel rescues dogs that were previously mistreated. Each dog I met was smiling and genuinely seemed to love his/her life. I recommend this company because of their love and respect for the animals!
